President Jay Byers Death, Obituary: Jay Byers, the 25th president of Simpson College in Indianola, Iowa, tragically passed away at the age of 54. His death marks a significant loss for the college community and the broader Indianola area.

Byers began his tenure as president on July 31, 2023, bringing with him a wealth of experience from his previous role as the president and CEO of the Greater Des Moines Partnership. A 1993 alumnus of Simpson College, he had also served on the college’s Board of Trustees for 11 years prior to his appointment as president. His professional journey began as an attorney in Indianapolis

During his time at Simpson College, Byers was instrumental in launching initiatives aimed at increasing accessibility to higher education. In September 2023, he announced two full-tuition scholarship programs: the $100K Promise, which offered scholarships to students from families earning $100,000 or less, and the 99 County Full-Tuition program, providing scholarships to one student from each of Iowa’s 99 counties based on financial need and academic merit

His inauguration on October 11, 2024, was a historic event, held during the college’s homecoming weekend. The ceremony featured performances, speeches, and a personal tribute, including a musical remembrance of his late mother, Joyce Jensen Byers. In his inaugural address, Byers emphasized the importance of embracing innovation and collaboration to ensure the college’s future success

Byers’ leadership was characterized by a commitment to student-centered education and community engagement. His vision for Simpson College included enhancing academic programs, fostering a culture of active engagement, and preparing students to be responsible global citizens

The college community, local residents, and colleagues mourn the loss of a leader who dedicated his life to education and community development. His legacy will continue to influence the direction of Simpson College and the Indianola community for years to come.
