Byers began his tenure as president on July 31, 2023, bringing with him a wealth of experience from his previous role as the president and CEO of the Greater Des Moines Partnership. A 1993 alumnus of Simpson College, he had also served on the college’s Board of Trustees for 11 years prior to his appointment as president. His professional journey began as an attorney in Indianapolis
During his time at Simpson College, Byers was instrumental in launching initiatives aimed at increasing accessibility to higher education. In September 2023, he announced two full-tuition scholarship programs: the $100K Promise, which offered scholarships to students from families earning $100,000 or less, and the 99 County Full-Tuition program, providing scholarships to one student from each of Iowa’s 99 counties based on financial need and academic merit
His inauguration on October 11, 2024, was a historic event, held during the college’s homecoming weekend. The ceremony featured performances, speeches, and a personal tribute, including a musical remembrance of his late mother, Joyce Jensen Byers.
